Make it Your Own

In the last issue we examined the “principalities” of Eph. 6:12.  As we continue studying the four areas of our spiritual battle, we come to the second, “powers.”  Remember the repetition of the word “against” is a figure of speech emphasizing the importance of each of these areas.

The Greek word for power used in verse 12 is exosusia.  Exousia, according to Bullinger’s lexicon, is delegated authority, liberty, or authority to do anything.  Arche (issue9/10-93) refers to the position of power, while exousia refers to the right to use the power.  The Devil has the right to rule the world.  We are not of this world and need not be under his dominion if we remain aware of our position in Christ, a citizen of heaven responsible to a Higher Authority.  I believe this principle of Higher Authority is that which inspired our country’s founders to throw off the yoke of British rule and establish a free nation.  The following is a list of other uses of exousia:

-Authority 29

Matt. 7:29; 8:9; 21:23, 24, 27

Mark 1:22, 27; 11:28, 29 33; 13:34

Acts 1:7, 5:4, 8:19, 26:18

Rom. 9:21, 13:1, 13:1, 13:2, 13:3

2 Th.  3:9

Jude 25

-Right 2

Heb. 13:10;

Rev. 22:14

-Strength 1

Rev. 17:13

Verb form; exousiazo:

-Bring under power 1

I Cor. 6:12

-Exercise authority upon 1

Luke 22:25

-Have power of 2

I Cor. 7:4

It would be wise to mark these, in some way, throughout your Bible to show that the Greek word is exousia.  It is very helpful when reading to know which Greek word for “power” is being used.

Though we must wrestle against the devil’s position of power and against his authority over the world, we can have the victory day by day as we stand firmly on the word of God, wearing the whole armor of God.  And remember love energizes faith, Gal. 5:6.  So when in doubt, rely on “love thy neighbor as thyself” through the conflict.  Because “we wrestle not against flesh and blood…”

Lamb's Corner

Poetry is one style of writing which conveys pictures and emotions.  Read this one, then write one of your own.

God wove a web of loveliness,
Of clouds and stars and birds,
But made not anything at all
So beautiful as words.

Five Little Soldiers

Five little soldiers standing in a row

(hold up fingers of one hand)

Three stood straight

And two stood so.

(hold fingers straight, bend down two)

Along came the captain

(move index finger of other hand in front)

And what do you think?

They all stood straight,

(hold all five fingers straight up)

As quick as a wink.
